Obituary

WOLFE: It is with great sadness the family announces the death of their mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Dora Wolfe. Dora passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Monday, June 21, 1999 after a brief illness. Dora Ida Mae McLean was born at home in the Creeford District, R.M. of Elton, November 26, 1906, the second child of six born to Archie and Maud McLean. She attended Norman Elementary School, Brookdale High School and then the Brandon Normal School where she received her teacher's certificate. She taught one year at Elton School, but then met a young blue-eyed Irishman, Frank Wolfe, who captured her heart. Dora married Francis Ernest Wolfe on July 13, 1927. Although Dora only taught school for one year, the rest of her life was a career as wife, homemaker, mother and educator teaching her children to live by the "Golden Rule"; to strive to always do and be the best they could be; to realize their education was never over, there was always something new to learn. She kept diaries for over fifty years and inside the covers were meaningful little poems and sayings which always had a moral or message to convey. Dora read literally thousands of books, taking a bag of books from the library every two weeks or so. Frank and Dora farmed the north half of 26-11-17 in the Douglas District. It was there where two daughters and a son were born to them. Times were hard because the depression struck in 1929, but Dora always had a big garden and loved berry-picking so the pantry was always stocked with canned vegetables and delicious preserves. She worked shoulder to shoulder with her husband sharing many farm chores, but she still found time for her community. She knit for the Red Cross during the war. Dora served as a secretary treasurer of the Douglas United Church for many years, was an active curler at the Douglas Curling Club and in later years at the Brandon Curling Club. She was a Charter Member and Life Member of both the Douglas and Brandon Women's Institutes, both of which she helped organize. Dora was also a Life Member of the Associated Country Women of the World, a Life Member of First Church United UCW of Brandon and Honorary Life Member of the Brandon Ladies Curling Club. In 1959, the family moved to 14 Patmore Drive in Brandon. They shared many happy times there, just as they had on the farm. Dora was always happiest when surrounded by her family. She enjoyed golfing and floor shuffling and was an active member of the Stanley Park Lawn Bowling Club until 1977. In 1984, Frank and Dora moved into Hobb's Manor, Brandon. Frank passed away in November 1986 and Dora continued living at Hobbs until March 17 of this year, at which time she moved to Fairview Home. Dora became ill in May and spent the last three weeks of her life in hospital. Dora was predeceased by her parents Archie, 1935 and Maud, 1966; brother George McLean, 1975; husband Frank in 1986; sister Edna Weight, 1988; dear daughter Helen Caithness of Edmonton in 1990. She was also predeceased by her mother-in-law, Kathleen, 1925; father-in-law, William, 1950; three sisters-in-law: Evaline Wolfe, Violet McLean and Viola Wolfe; four brothers-in-law: Ralph Williams, Slim Speakman, Jack Wolfe and Edwin Weight. Dora is survived and lovingly remembered by daughter, Doreen (Bud) Andrews of Brandon and their children: Neil (Heather) Andrews, Nathan and Tara of Rapid City, MB; Darryl (Barb) Andrews and Ryan of Brandon; Laurie (Janice) Andrews and Jeffrey of St. Albert, AB; and Karyn (Len) Kondro, Jay and Devin of St. Albert, AB; the Caithness children, Scot (Leslie), Alex and Jamie of Sherwood Park, AB; Sheri (Allen) Sept of St. Albert, AB;and Shawn Caithness of Edmonton, AB. The celebration of Dora's life was held at Memories Chapel on Thursday, June 24, 1999. Mona Franklin officiated. Soloist, David Hillis, sang "Precious Memories" (accompanied by Doreen Stapleton), which was one of Frank and Dora's favorite hymns. Dora's cremated remains were laid to rest beside her beloved Frank in the family plot in the Madford Cemetery at Douglas. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Dora to the Canadian Cancer Society Westman Region, 42 McTavish Ave. E., Brandon, MB, R7A 2B2 or to a charity of choice. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel, 727-0330.
"Rest in peace dear Mum, Gram, and Great Grandma. You will always be a precious memory to all of us."
