SHELVEY: Dora Adeline Shelvey passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Sunday, January 29, 2006. Dora was born on December 31, 1912 in the Justice District, the second child of William and Anne Walker. She was always competing with her older sister Hazel, who was born on Christmas Day a year earlier, but Dora had to settle on being a New Years Eve baby instead of New Years Day. Dora and her siblings, Hazel, Irene, Elgin and Jim attended Orange Hall and Clinton Schools until the eighth grade. Dora then started helping her father on the farm and did housework for many neighbours in the area. During her younger years she enjoyed playing sports and going on picnics with her family. Dora met Bill Shelvey at one of these picnics and a couple of years later were married in November of 1939 in Brandon. They began a farming career in the Forrest area. During those years they raised three children: Jim, Elaine and Phyllis. Dora always grew a huge garden of which she preserved everything. She sewed almost all the clothes that the children wore as well as for herself. She was a wonderful knitter, crocheter and quilter and was never happy unless everything was perfectly made. In the early 1970's, Bill and Dora sold their farm and moved to Forrest to live. Dora continued with her vegetable garden and took great pride in her flower garden. Due to illness, Dora moved to Fairview Home in October of 2000. There she became healthy again and enjoyed the many activities there: baking, knitting, playing bingo, and going on outings in the handivan. Dora will be lovingly remembered by: her children, Jim (Linda) Elaine (Garth) Hockley all of Brandon and Phyllis Shelvey of Forrest; grandchildren, Paul (Terri), Ryan (Rochelle), Derek, Heather, Neale, Travis (Julie); great grandchildren, Dylan, Marcus and Collin. She is also survived by: her sisters-in-law, Jessie of London, England, Eva and Kay of Brandon; brother-in-law, Frank of Rivers and many nieces and nephews. Dora was predeceased by her husband, Bill in 1999; her brothers and sisters as well as many sisters and brothers-in-law. The Ceremony to Celebrate Dora's Life was held at Memories Chapel on Wednesday, February 1, 2006. Private interment will follow in the Humesville Cemetery at a later date. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Dora to the Humesville Cemetery Committee, c/o Mr. Ken Barron, 9 Redwing Bay, Brandon, MB R7C 1E1. The family wish to thank the caring nurses and staff on the second floor at Fairview Home who treated Dora and everyone like family. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com.
