Obituary

Donna Ellen Ewasiuk passed away peacefully with family at her side at the Assiniboine Centre on Sunday, June 1, 2025 at the age of 85.

Donna was born in Brandon on December 4, 1939 to Harry and Grace Miller and resided on the family farm in the Justice area. She attended the Justice Consolidated School for Grades 1 to 11 and Grade 12 at the Brandon Collegiate. In high school Donna played baseball, belonged to the C.G.I.T. and attended Sunday School at Justice. She completed her teacher's certificate at the Normal School in Brandon and then went on to teach at the Glanton School from 1958 to 1961 and at Hazel M. Kellington School in Neepawa for one year.

Donna met the love of her life at a Glanton dance in the fall of 1960. It wasn't long before he swept her off her feet. Donna married Roy Ewasiuk on July 21, 1962 and had 62 beautiful years together. In 1965, Donna and Roy moved from Brandon to their farm north of Justice to raise their family. They had two children Brent and Brenda. She encouraged both of her kids to do their best in school and was very proud of them. She loved to go camping with her kids in the tent trailer and made sure we all knew how to swim, even her grandchildren. Donna worked alongside Roy on the grain farm for 39 years. She also substitute taught at the elementary and high schools in the area for many years. When she was no longer substitute teaching, Donna bought flax straw from farmers and loved taking her grandchildren with her as she traveled the countryside. In 2004 Donna and Roy moved to Brandon.

Donna enjoyed curling, participating in the Curlette League in Brandon and many bonspiels with Roy or "just with the girls". She also bowled in the Minnedosa league for five years with Roy, Lorna and Neil. Donna joined the Brandon Elks Lodge and was a member for 15 years.

Donna was a great cook. If there was any celebration, she was quick to offer to make the cake. If you asked anyone, they would say Donna's cabbage rolls, strawberry jam and dill pickles were the best. Donna won first place two years in a row at the Brandon Pickle Fest for her dill pickles. Her pickles even received accolades from as far away as Toronto. Donna's number one fans of her pickles were her grandsons and great-grandsons. Her granddaughters' favorite was her homemade strawberry jam.

Throughout the years Donna and Roy traveled to Scotland, England, Mexico, Portugal, Spain, Dominican, US coast to coast, Canada coast to coast and Hawaii. They cruised the Eastern and Western Caribbean, Alaska, Panama and the Mediterranean. Donna even rode a camel in Morocco. Many trips were taken to world curling events with friends. Numerous winters were spent in Arizona and Texas in their fifth wheel or motorhome making fond memories and life-long friends. Donna and Roy also belonged to the Good Sam Club for many years.
While annual camping trips with all the grandchildren were her favorite, she also enjoyed family trips to Hawaii, Disneyland, Disney World, Arizona and Mexico.

Holidays held a special place in Donna's heart but Christmas was her favorite time of year. She loved to decorate the house and yard with many ornaments and lights. The glow from the lights could be seen for miles.

Donna enjoyed playing dominoes and games with her family and friends. She played card games such as Euchre, 500, canasta, crib and especially box rummy with her grandchildren. As much as she enjoyed playing, if you were her partner, you knew your odds of winning were not good.

Family was the most important part of her life. She leaves to mourn her beloved husband Roy, son Brent (Heather) Ewasiuk, daughter Brenda (Glenn) Wallace, grandchildren Ashley (Joel) Hart, Justin (Dar D'Aquila) Wallace, Bryce (Jackie) Ewasiuk, Amanda Wallace and great-grandchildren Luke and Braxton Hart. Also surviving her is sister Lorna McFaddin and many nieces and nephews.

Donna was predeceased by her parents Harry and Grace Miller, brother Garry Miller, brother-in-law Neil McFaddin, Roy's parents Nick and Mary Ewasiuk, sister-in-law Nettie Ewasiuk and brother-in-law Lorne Ewasiuk.

A Celebration of Life was held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at Monterey Estates Community Centre with Reverend Barb Jardine officiating. A private interment took place at the Brandon Cemetery.

Thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Brandon General Hospital and Assiniboine Centre for their great care and compassion.
