HARLEY: Donald Hubert Harley passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Saturday, April 9, 2005 with his family at his side. Don, the eldest son, was born on January 18, 1930 at Turtleford, Saskatchewan to L.G. and Pearl Harley. He grew up on a farm near Livelong, Saskatchewan and went to school at South Branch; he later went to high school at Livelong. Don had no desire to take up farming with his Dad, so he left and went to Leduc, Alberta to make his fortune in the "oil patch". He held different positions in the drilling industry and was posted all over Alberta, parts of Saskatchewan and finally Manitoba in Virden. It was in Virden that he met and married the mother of his children, Corrine Prefontaine. For many years Don had dreamed of learning how to fly. He accomplished this between the Virden and Brandon Flying Clubs, receiving his flying license in 1954. In 1957, he left the "oil patch" and joined the life insurance industry with Sun Life. He and his family spent a short stint in Flin Flon, but returned to Brandon in 1961. After Sun Life, he went over to Monarch Life beginning in 1976. Later, Monarch was sold to North American Life in 1985. He was with North American Life in 1995, when it was sold to Manulife Financial. Don won many awards during his career for "Top Salesman of the Month". He won the "National Quality Award" in recognition for years of life underwriting service of high quality; the "Macaulay Club Award", attained by virtue of his production, achieving 15 years of club membership - the office of vice-president of the Macaulay Club. He was made a Life Member of the Million Dollar Round Table in 1985. Don was a member of the Life Underwriters for 47 years and of the Elk's Club since 1952 (52 years). In 1991, Don was married to Annette Phillips. Hunting, fishing and camping were Don's passions. He made many fishing trips up to Northern Manitoba, but his most favorite spot was his campsite at Child's Lake in the Duck Mountains. He held it for many years, reluctantly giving in up in 2002, due to failing health. He and Annette enjoyed many winter holidays in Hawaii and Mexico. Left to mourn the loss of Don are: his loving wife of 14 years, Annette; his four children, Dwight (Carol), Lynne, Mona (David Lancaster) and Craig. His grandchildren: Kathleen Harley; Jordan, Mitchell, and Zachary Dunning; Danielle, Nicole, and Mathew Lancaster. Great grandchild Seth Gerow; step-daughter Diane Drysdale, and step-grandchildren, Nicole, Tracee and Chris Drysdale, Jodi Phillips and baby Tommy. Don is also survived by his sister Thelma of Humboldt, Saskatchewan; brother Brian (Judy) of Parkside, Saskatchewan, as well as many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Myrna. The Service to Celebrate Don's Life was held at Memories Chapel on Thursday, April 14, 2005. Rev. John Nesbitt of Trinity United Church officiated. Urn Bearer was his son, Dwight. Cremation has taken place according to Don's wishes. Interment followed in Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Don may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 2B3 or a the Canadian Cancer Society - Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 2B7. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits
In the presence of fate is strength undefeatable."
