EAGLE: Don passed away suddenly on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, surrounded by his wife and family. Don was born on June 25, 1931, in Brandon, Manitoba where he was raised and attended school. Don grew up enjoying many fishing trips and picnics with his family. Don enjoyed several different careers throughout his life. He was a mechanic, a brakeman for CPR and was especially proud of his years at the Brandon Fire Department as both a firefighter and ambulance attendance. It was during these years that Don made some of his lifelong friends. Having watched his father build the family home, gave him the notion that he would build a home for himself and his prospective bride Ruby. They married in the 1956. That began a very successful construction career that spanned the next 20 years. He was well known for the quality homes that he produced in and around Brandon. Don and Ruby would move from one barely finished house to the next as the demand grew. Children and grandchildren grew up laughing over stories of how they would barely get time to unpack the suitcases in between houses. Don joined in a partnership with Allen Pedlow for many of those construction years. In 1959, their son Larry was born followed by a daughter, Heather in 1961. Don passed on his love of camping and fishing to his own children. While residing in Brandon, Ruby kept Don out and about with lots of square dancing events, which Don also greatly enjoyed. They moved out to an acreage south of Brandon in the 1970's and totally enjoyed the country life. Cattle, dogs, exotic birds, tropical fish, horses, gardening and raising teenagers kept them pretty busy. Don and Ruby enjoyed early retirement and as snowbirds spent many winter months traveling to the US in their motorhome. On occasion you might find Don at the Army and Navy catching up with a few friends. In 1996, they moved back into Brandon where they have resided these past years. If not involved in one of his many hobbies: painting, gardening, furniture making, raising tropical fish, Don and Ruby would be headed to a casino, where Don usually managed to have good luck. He was well known for his fine furniture and woodcraft skills that have filled not only their home, but also the homes of their children and grandchildren. The family treasures the many beautiful gifts that he shared with them. He passed on his creative skills to both Larry and Heather. Don is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Ruby (nee Logan); son Larry (Kelley) and their children Gus and Alyssa; daughter Heather Eagle Bears, her children Jaimeson, Jordan, Michael, and Eileen; one sister Ruth and her family. He was predeceased by his father Louis; mother Marjorie; father-in-law and mother-in-law Andy and Grace Logan; son-in-law Dale Eagle Bears; and infant grandson Christopher Eagle Bears. A Graveside Ceremony to Celebrate Don's Life was held at the Carroll Cemetery, Carroll, Manitoba, on Saturday, March 21, 2009. Pastor Mike Davis of Bethel Christian Assembly officiated. Pallbearers were Allen Pedlow, Doug Chalmers, John Donahoe, Grant Moffat, Doug Sanderson and Brad MacIntosh. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Don may be made to a charity of one's choice. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
