Obituary

Deborah Lynn Reynolds of Athens, PA died tragically on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at the age of 41 leaving this world too soon. Deborah was a devoted wife, exceptional mother, and beloved daughter and sister. Deborah was smart, kind, funny and wise. She was a loyal friend to many and was someone who made people feel special, always putting others before herself. She was born on October 9, 1974 in Emo, Ontario. Deborah is survived by her beloved husband of 12 years, Dermot Michael Reynolds, and her beloved children, Evelyn Grace, Scarlet Frances, and Declan Michael. She is also survived by her parents Douglas and Naomi Mahoney of Brandon, Manitoba, her brother Chris and sister-in-law Jill Mahoney and their children Halsey and Michael of Jamestown, North Dakota, her father-in-law Paul Reynolds of Halifax, Nova Scotia, her brother-in-law John Reynolds and sister-in- law Kate Morisset and their children Isabelle and Aideen of Calgary, Alberta and her sister-in-law Aideen Reynolds and brother-in-law Daniel Labonté and daughter Nora of Ottawa, Ontario, and her sister-in-law Fionnuala Reynolds and brother-in-law Trevor MacDonald of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her uncle Gary and Cindy Mahoney of Virden, MB; Aunts and Uncles Dave and Betty Yerama and family of Carmen, MB, Lloyd Yerama and family and friend Helen of Dauphin, MB, Jane Yerama of Winnipeg, MB, Lorraine Gulenchin and family of Ochre Beach, MB, Gladys Yerama and family of Dauphin, MB, Sandra Yerama of Dauphin, MB, Lyle and Maureen Yerama and family of Spruce Grove, AB, Linda Yerama and Brian Wallwin of Surrey, BC, Bill Yerama of North Vancouver, BC and Ken and Linda Yerama and family of Winnipeg, MB. Deborah was predeceased by her paternal grandparents Nick and Julia Yerama, maternal grandparents Robert and Evelyn Mahoney, her mother-in-law Frances Larkin Reynolds and her niece Beatrice Labonte. Deborah's most recent professional life included working as an Attorney for the Child in New York State in the Family Courts of Tioga, Tompkins and Cortland Counties. In this position, Deborah was able to draw on her strong maternal sense developed by raising her own three children and by her ability to apply the law to difficult, often emotional cases involving vulnerable children. She was a gifted Attorney for Children and well respected by every judge and attorney with whom she worked. She had a commanding presence, in which she projected competence, reasonableness and empathy. Prior to this, Deborah earned her Juris Doctor at the University of Manitoba and then furthered her legal education at Cornell University, where she obtained her Master of Laws with special interest in human rights and UN law. At Cornell, she was introduced to the culture of Ithaca, a place in which she felt a sense of belonging. In February 2004, a mere six weeks after immigrating to the United States, Deborah passed the notoriously difficult New York State bar exam on her first attempt. This was an exceptional feat, as she had to learn the intricacies of civil and criminal law in New York State in particular and in the United States in general, despite having learned and practiced common law in Canada. Prior to this, Deborah resided in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was a financial services associate lawyer with Aikins MacAulay and Thorvaldson LLP. A Celebration of Deborah's Life took place in the Kinsmen Rehearsal Hall, Queen Elizabeth Music Building, Brandon University, on Saturday, April 16, 2016. Linda Clark officiated. Interment will take place at a later date. Donations in memory of Deborah may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B3 or a charity of choice.
