Obituary

David Edgar Thompson, age 78 years, passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre.

Born November 13, 1944 in Portage la Prairie, David was raised on a farm north of MacGregor, where he attended Path Head School and MacGregor High School. David moved to Brandon, training at Brandon Mental Hospital to become a Psychiatric Nurse. After working in that field at both BMH and Central Park Lodge Nursing Home, David changed career paths, training to become a Journeyman Carpenter at ACC. David built a number of homes and 4-plexes in Brandon before becoming a Building Inspector for the City of Brandon.

David was an avid curler, golfer, and fisherman throughout his life and also took up bowling in his later years. Camping with his family was a favourite activity; over the years David and his family enjoyed camping at Oak Lake, Aspen Grove, and Shady Oaks/Keeshkeemaquah campgrounds. As well, David and Irene enjoyed traveling with friends and family on trips to places such as The British Isles, Mexico, the Maritimes, Branson, and a cruise through the Panama Canal. David loved playing cards and board games, especially Monopoly and Settlers of Catan. He was a fierce competitor! David served on the board of Trinity United Church and was an active member of the United Commercial Travelers (UCT) service organization, having served as president and chaplain and regularly working at bingo.

David met his wife Irene at BMH when they were both in nursing school. They married in 1967 and raised their family in Brandon. David leaves behind his wife Irene and his daughters Janet (Gord) Turner, Sharon, and Dianne. David was a loving grandfather to Kyle (Dione) Turner and Justin (Lorisa) Turner and great-grandfather to Amelia and Brooklyn. David will also be lovingly remembered by his twin brother Dwight (Louanne), and siblings Joanne MacMillan, Heather Agnew-Strang (Mac Strang), Greg, and Lois (Rob) Wedgewood. He was predeceased by his parents Stephen and Evelyn Thompson, his sister-in-law Sabina Thompson, and his brother-in-law Dave McMillan. He will be missed by all.

David will be remembered for his love of family, his service to the community, and his enjoyment of life.

The Celebration of David's Life took place at Trinity United Church on Monday, August 28, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be held at Beaver Creek Cemetery at a later date.

David lived a happy and healthy life. Having been diagnosed with liver cancer only a short time ago, his illness was mercifully brief. The family would like to thank the staff at Palliative Care at Brandon Regional Health Centre for their care and compassion in David's final days.

Donations in memory of David may be made to the Western Manitoba Cancer Centre, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B3 or Trinity United Church, 1515 – 6th Street, Brandon, MB R7A 6B3.
