GIBSON: David Gibson, beloved husband of Terry, dear father of Laurie Earle, Lynne McKenzie (Jamie), Candi Shelvey (Dave) and dear son of Jean Gibson, passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2005 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. The Ceremony to Celebrate David's Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 2:00 pm. Complete obituary information will follow. GIBSON: The death of David Gibson occurred at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Saturday, March 19, 2005. David was born on August 1, 1931 in Brandon, eldest son of Elizabeth Jean Gibson and David Gibson Sr. David obtained his education in Brandon, attending, Central School, Earl Haig and Brandon Collegiate. He studied violin for eight years with Mae Selwood, under the auspices of the Toronto Conservatory of Music. As a youngster, he played at school assemblies, concerts, church socials and also the "Eaton's Good Deed Club" radio show with Bill Radcliff. His first taste of employment, as a teen, was working side by side with his dad on various jobs in the city. He also worked at the Strand Theatre and Green Acres Drive-in. In 1947and 48, David worked summer relief at the Brandon Mental Health Centre and thus began his career at B.M.H.C. He enrolled in the School of Nursing Program, graduating as a Psychiatric Nurse in 1951. He continued his education by taking Management and Administrative courses. He held various positions throughout his career and retired as Director of Nursing in 1987. He played a major role in the hospital achieving the accreditation status in 1974. In 1984, he received the B.M.H.C. Award of Merit in recognition of outstanding service to patients. David was also involved in various organizations associated with B.M.H.C. He was a member of the M.G.E.A., a member of the Board of Directors of the Employees Trust for five years, serving as chairman for two years. He was secretary of the B.M.H.C. Benevolent Fund committee and a founding member of the B.M.H.C. Historical Society. David was active in the Psychiatric Nurses Association at the local, provincial and national levels. He served as executive member of the Brandon branch, secretary for four years. He was a founding member of the provincial association and served as secretary. David was the first Manitoba representative to the Canadian Council of Psychiatric Nurses and was an executive member for two years. In 1981, David was presented with the Psychiatric Nurses Association of Canada, Certificate of Merit. David was an avid and competitive sportsman, including, tennis, golf, curling and badminton. His introduction to curling was with his dad in the B.M.H. league and M.G.E.A. bonspiels. He was a member of the Wheat City Curling Club for many years. David enjoyed badminton for over three decades competing in singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions. In 1979 he worked as a volunteer in Badminton with the Canada Winter Games. Golf was also one of David's favorite sports. He began golfing in the early 1950's and continued up until two years ago, golfing in the senior's league. He was also a member of the Brandon Golf and Country Club and the Wheat City Golf Club. His other sport tennis, proved to be the most rewarding. In 1948 at age sixteen years, he won the Western Canadian Jr. Boys tournament at Clear Lake. During the 1950's, he played at the B.M.H. tennis club, winning many singles titles. It was also here that he met and won the heart of his future wife, Terry. They were married in 1952 and raised three daughters. In the1970's and 1980's, David and tennis partner, Harland Bell dominated the tennis field in men's doubles. In 1973, David was named sportsman of the month in the Brandon Sun. David served as President of the Brandon Tennis Club in three decades and also for many years as Tournament director. In 1976, he volunteered as Westman Regional Co-ordinator for tennis at the Manitoba Summer Games. David had a wonderful sense of humor with a sharp and ready wit. A talented cartoonist, his characters graced the fences and buildings at the green Acres Drive-In Theatre. He took great pride in his home and yard, enjoying year round barbecuing. David also enjoyed classical music. David and a group of friends enjoyed playing cards. They established the "Pogey Pot Poker Club" in 1955. With a limit of two dollars, the club remained active for the next forty-five years. David and Terry enjoyed many years of travel to Palm Desert for their winter vacation. He was a good friend and had many lasting friends. David will be sadly missed by: his loving wife, Terry; their daughters; Laurie Earle and her son Brian; Lynne (Jamie) McKenzie and their sons, Jay and Scott (Kathy); Candi (Dave) Shelvey and their daughters, Erika and Tawny. David also leaves his mother, Elizabeth Jean Gibson of Brandon and a brother, Jack (Joyce) Gibson of Calgary, AB. He was predeceased by; his father, David Gibson Sr. in 1988. The Ceremony to Celebrate David's Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at 2:00 pm. The Rev. Orton Anderson will officiate. A private interment will follow in the Brandon cemetery. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of David to a charity of choice.
