Obituary

FREEBORN: With saddened hearts we announce the passing of Clare Borden Freeborn on Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home, Brandon, Manitoba. Clare was born to Davis and Emma Freeborn on July 23, 1912 at Summerville, Manitoba. His family moved to Firdale when he was small. After completing his education at Firdale and Sidney, he continued farming on the family farm at Firdale. On October 1, 1936 he married Diana Roden and they farmed until 1946. After a farm accident, Clare was left unable to farm full time, so they purchased the General Store and Post Office in Harte. They closed the store in September 1970, remodeling it into living quarters and residing there until 1978 when they retired to Brandon. After spending twelve years in Brandon, they moved back to Carberry where they resided until entering Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home, Brandon in March 2004. Besides running the store, Clare did continue to do some farming and was a salesman for many years for the G. McLean Company of Winnipeg. Clare enjoyed gardening and woodworking. In later years he did some beautiful needlework, which won him recognition each year at the summer fair. He was an avid reader, loved music and spent many great times playing cards with family and friends. He and Diana had many memorable camping and fishing trips with friends. Holidays took them to the mountains numerous times and to the east coast. He was a life-member of the Masonic Lodge. Clare can be remembered as a quiet, kind, gentle man who suffered many unfortunate health problems throughout his life but never uttered a complaint. Clare leaves to mourn his passing and celebrate his life: daughters Ramona (Cec) Sparrow and Beverley (George) Ranson. He was a loving grandfather to Gerald (Karen) Sparrow, Trinda (Darren) Sparrow, Kent and Keri Ranson. He will be sadly missed by his eight great grandchildren: Jennifer, Falynn, Morgan, Jarrett, Brooklyn, Bryce, Ben and Will; two great-great grandchildren: Randi and Alexis. Clare was predeceased by his wife Diana on June 9, 2006. Clare and Diana were looking forward to celebrating their 70th anniversary on October 1. He is also predeceased by brother Rae, and two sisters Muriel Wright and Thelma Price. A Memorial Service to Celebrate Clare and Diana's Life was held at Carberry United Church on Saturday, October 21, 2006. Rev. Peggy Reid officiated. A heartfelt eulogy was given by Keri and Kent Ranson. Clare and Diana's ashes were contained in an oak urn crafted by son-in-law George. Urn bearer was Gerald Sparrow. A honor guard from the Carberry Masonic Lodge #29 was in attendance. Interment followed in the Carberry Plains Cemetery. Donations in memory of Clare and Diana may be made to a charity of choice. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
