Obituary

Christina Morris nee Yates, age 94 years, passed away peacefully in Fairview Home in Brandon, Manitoba on March 15, 2016 with family by her side. Christina was born in 1921 on the family farm north of Killarney, attending school at the Northcote School. She married John Morris there and together they farmed for a short while before moving to Jackfish, Ontario, and soon after to Schreiber, Ontario where she resided raising her family of three sons and a daughter. Christina loved gardening, cooking, doing crafts, snowmobiling, sewing, knitting and all of her family have at least one of her afghans. As her children grew and left home, Christina found work outside her home to keep her busy, working with the Salvation Army, Canada Post, Spadoni's, McLeod's and Chapells. In her free time Christina was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, the United Church Auxiliary and the Rebekah's, as well as playing baseball into her 50's. Tragedy hit hard in 1978 when her youngest son Brent was killed in a car accident. As her family grew and spread across Ontario and Manitoba, Christina became an active member in the Schreiber community loving to keep the family aware of events back home. John and Christina celebrated 50 years together in 1992 with their family and friends. They loved to visit son Garth and his family to see the Clydesdales and going for buggy or sleigh rides. In 1997, John passed away and Christina found the family home too large and overwhelming, moved into an apartment, then finally into Collingwood Court where she enjoyed time with other residents and working in the seniors centre. In 2002, Christina decided to make another move to be closer to more of her family and moved back to Manitoba, living with her daughter Joanne in Ste. Anne before moving to Brandon in 2004. Christina loved being near her grandchildren and great grandchildren in the area, spending time entertaining them with stories, baking cookies and watching movies. We remember her well at age 80 climbing trees with her great grandsons and hopping over the pasture fence with her great granddaughter. Going for drives in the Killarney area showing the great grandchildren where she grew up. Having family and holiday dinners at her son Ron's or granddaughter Marie's homes. Living in Brandon also enabled her to spend time with her brothers and their families that lived in the area. In her later years Christina was a resident of Fairview Personal Care Home in Brandon where she received excellent care on both 3rd and 5th floors. Christina is survived by her son Ron (Yvette) of Brandon, Manitoba, Garth (Victoria) of Terrace Bay, Ontario, Joanne (Wayne) Pearen of Strathclair, Manitoba; nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews as well as her brother Ted (Blythe) Yates of Brandon and a sister-in-law Alice of Hinton, Alberta. She was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Tressia Yates; son Brent; husband John; brothers Reginald, Jack, Albert, Art and Cyril; sister Betty Baxter; sisters-in-law Margie, Marion, Vera, Marlene and Nancy and a brother-in-law Russ Baxter. She wanted to be remembered not in tears but with fond memories. An interment service will follow at a later date in Schreiber. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the McCausland Hospital in Terrace Bay, Ontario.
