Obituary

Calvin Sheppard passed on May 3, 2001, after a brief illness. He was born on July 3, 1925 in Tilton, Conception Bay, Newfoundland. Calvin was the second oldest of six children. When he became old enough he joined the Newfoundland Regiment and served from 1944 - 1945 until the war ended. Calvin then worked in the lumber business until he joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1951. He served the forces for twenty-five years and retired in 1976. Calvin then joined the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires where he served in Shilo, Manitoba for twenty-one years until his retirement. He spent his retirement years woodworking, tending to the grounds of his home in Sprucewoods, taking leisurely drives and thoroughly enjoying life. Calvin was a friendly and outgoing individual. He was the type of man who would stop to talk to anyone he knew, especially his army buddies, old co-workers and those he got to know over the years in Shilo. Calvin was intensely proud of his time in the military. He cared for his family very much and looked forward to seeing his grandchildren whose faces lit up when he told stories of Newfoundland and his many experiences during his military life. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Bertha of fifty-six years of marriage, and his five children, Vivian (Brian) Cyr of Winnipeg, Manitoba; Chesley (Karen) Sheppard of Shilo, Manitoba; Neil (Barbara) Sheppard of Red Deer, Alberta; Sharon (Pierre) Rioux of Val St. Michelle, Quebec; Brian Sheppard of Brandon, Manitoba, eleven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, sisters, Stella Moulton and Isabelle Batton; brothers, Ralph and Don Sheppard; and numerous nieces and nephews from Newfoundland. He was pre-deceased by his daughter, Margaret; brother, Chesley; and parents, William Henry and Emily. Calvin's Memorial Service was held at Memories Chapel on Monday, May 7, 2001. The pallbearers were Jeffrey Cyr, Charlie Cobb, Jim Gradwell, Ken Sheppard, Chesley Shaun Sheppard and Raymond LeClaire. Interment followed in the Veteran's Section of the Brandon Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends may make a donation in memory of Calvin to the Brandon General Hospital Foundation, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, R7A 2B3 or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 203-42 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, R7A 2B2. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
Calvin will be greatly missed and will forever remain in our hearts.
Dad, we love you. Rest in peace.
