Peacefully after a lengthy illness, Burleigh Edith Ashby passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2002 at her residence in Hillcrest Place, Brandon. Burleigh was born at St. Mark's, Manitoba on July 14, 1902, the eldest daughter of George and Annabella Kelly. At a young age, Burleigh moved to the Sandy Lake area, where she attended school. She left school early and worked for different families in the area. It was while she was cooking at Wilson's Mill in the Clear Creek district that she met her future husband, Ernest. They were married at Elphinstone, Manitoba in 1922 and moved to Crawford Park, Manitoba in 1926. Here they farmed and operated the General Store for several years. In 1961, Burleigh and Ernie retired to Brandon, Manitoba. They continued to spend many happy summers at the cabin at Sandy Lake, which suited Burleigh's great love of nature and the outdoors. During the winters, Burleigh also enjoyed curling for several years with the Brandon Silver Bells. Having just celebrated her 100th birthday, Burleigh was the last surviving member of her family, having been predeceased by her parents, seven brothers and a sister. She was also predeceased by, her husband Ernie and an infant daughter Frances. Burleigh is survived by, her only son, Fred, daughter-in-law, Ruby and granddaughter, Karen. There are also several nieces and nephews remaining. A Ceremony to Celebrate the life of Burleigh was held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street, North, Brandon on Thursday July 25, 2002 at 2:00 P.M. Interment took place in the Crawford Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations may be made in Burleigh's name to Hillcrest Place, 930-26th Street, Brandon MB R7B 2B8 or to the Alzheimer's Society, 437 9th Street, Brandon MB R7A 4A9.
