Obituary

The death of Basil Joseph Doran of Grand Valley Place, father of Bill (Lydia) and Kate (Murray) Lyons, occurred in the city on July 02, 2001. Basil was born in Newfoundland on September 20, 1933. He was the oldest of a family of six girls and two boys, born to William and Gertrude Doran. Basil's father eventually moved the family back to St. John's from Corner Brook where William operated a pharmacy down by the Narrows of St John's Harbour. Basil was 16 when his father died, and as the oldest son, went off to work to support his mother and younger sisters and brother, finding work with CN Rail, working on track repair at remote work camps on the island. Eventually Basil settled back in St. John's where he met and married Patricia Earles in November 1955. Two children, Bill and Kate, were born to the couple as Basil settled into the trade of painter at autobody shops at several car dealerships. In 1972, at the urging of his brother Bill, Basil and Patsy moved their family to Prince Albert where they lived for the better part of the 1970's, returning for several years to St. John's. At Patsy's urging the couple moved to Brandon in 1983 to be closer to their first grandchild, Jennifer, who had been born to Kate and her husband Murray. Eventually Basil's son, Bill would join them in the Brandon area to help his father after Patsy suffered a debilitating brain aneurism in February 1984. The intervening years would be hard on Basil's health as he strived to look after Patsy at home for as long as he could, while continuing to work. Eventually, Patsy moved to Fairview Nursing Home. By that time Basil's health had deteriorated to the point where he could no longer work. Patsy died prior to Christmas 1998. In the past number of years, Basil moved into the Grand Valley apartments where he met Joy Galloway, who has been his good friend and companion. Joy's daughter, Dawn, has also been a good friend to Basil, helping to check that he was taking his medication and ensuring he got to the hospital if he needed to be there. Basil Doran will be missed by his son, Bill and his family, Lydia and Mano; and Kate and her family, Murray, Jennifer and Mark. Basil's brother, Bill and sisters, Helen, Bernice, Lorraine, Jeannie, Rosemary, and Barbara gathered today in St. John's for a memorial mass in remembrance of Basil. A time of remembrance will be held at Memories Chapel, 330 - 18th Street North, on Thursday, July 5th, 2001 at 11:30 a.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Basil may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, #203, 42 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 2B2. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
