Obituary

Arlene Mable Box (nee Mudge) was born on April 20, 1939 in Cartwright, Manitoba and passed away peacefully on September 26, 2021 in Killarney, Manitoba at the age of 82 years.

Arlene was born the oldest of five children to Art and Iva Mudge and attended the Howard School in the Mather District. As the oldest, she had a lot of responsibilities, from looking after her brother and three younger sisters, to helping tend to the cows, sheep and chickens, as well as assisting with preparing meals. Around the age of sixteen, Arlene started working at the Ninette Tuberculosis Sanatorium on Pelican Lake. A short time later, she met a handsome young man, Lee, from the area and they started dating. Lee and Arlene were married on August 2, 1958, and they started a family and working together.

Arlene spent their early married life raising their three kids while Lee kept busy working. Lee's working with Marshall Wells National Farmway/Peavey Mart meant moving the family to numerous places across Saskatchewan and Alberta, including Red Deer, Weyburn, Peace River, Swift Current and Humboldt. Arlene kept busy with working at Peavey Mart, Co-op, and as a nanny and housekeeper for the parents of newborn twins. Family time included camping, fishing, and visiting relatives.

Lee and Arlene decided it was time to move back "home" and they moved into the Box family cottage on Pelican Lake. They started planning their next venture: the "Grocery Box", which debuted its grand opening on September 30, 1988. Being in this business gave them many opportunities to go on cruises and travel to places such as Hawaii, the Bahamas and Mexico. Lee and Arlene also bought a place in Texas where they could escape the cold Canadian winters and enjoy the nice warm weather while golfing, shopping and hosting Happy Hour.

Arlene enjoyed ceramics, golf, painting, puzzles, baking, cooking, and in recent years, learning about her ancestry through DNA. She took great pride in hearing about her kids', grandkids', and great-grandkids' accomplishments. She enjoyed spending time on her social media, keeping track of what her friends and family were up to, and video-chatting with her grandkids and great-grandkids.

Arlene is survived by her husband of 63 years, Lee; son Shane (Rhonda), grandson Riley (Lynley) and great grandchildren Isla and Harvey, grandson Jaret Box (Erin Legare); daughter Maureen, granddaughter Presley and great grandson Wilder, grandson Spencer (Alecia) and great granddaughter Ara, and grandson Bram; grandson Dylan Goulet and great granddaughter Scarlett, and granddaughter Vanessa Goulet. Arlene is also survived by her sisters Glenda Zinck, Gaye Sutherland and Dawn Lamb; two special sisters-in law Anne Pierce and Millie Mudge; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arlene was predeceased by her daughter Shelley Goulet, grandson Dustin Goulet, parents Art and Iva Mudge, dear brother Larry Mudge, and special brothers-in-law Cyril Cooper, Gordon Lamb, Jim Zinck and Archie Sutherland.

Arlene has left a lifetime of memories for everyone who had the chance to meet her, and her family would like to thank everyone for the kind words of support.

A private family graveside service will take place at Hillside Cemetery, Belmont.

Donations in memory of Arlene may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 185 Sherbook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7
