Obituary

With her family by her side, following a courageous battle with cancer, Anne Melnyk passed away on Friday, September 16, 2016 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Born January 20, 1935, the daughter of Martha and Stefan Pohyanyko, Anne grew up on the family farm and attended King George School and Birtle High School. Anne married Daniel Melnyk on July 25, 1953. Together they raised three children and resided in Brandon. While raising her children she took a beautician course and operated the business out of her home. She later worked at the Brandon Mental Health Centre as a hairdresser until her retirement in 1992. Anne's interests were varied and included fishing, camping, gardening, crocheting, knitting, playing cards, bingo, ceramics, paper toole, 10 pin bowling (one frame from a perfect game was her best score) and travelling. Affectionately known as "Baba" by all, she loved her family and friends – the more the merrier. Every special occasion was celebrated at Baba's house with a mountain of food – all hand prepared by Baba. Remaining to cherish Anne's memory her son Murray (Carol) Melnyk; daughters Mary-Anne (Barry) Bailey and Gail (Gord) Hyde; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Anne is also survived by her brother Mike Pohyanyko and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Stefan, mother Martha, husband Dan, infant daughter Rosilene, brother Peter, sister Rose, brother-in-law Bill Zapuchlak, sister-in-law Lorraine Pohyanyko, sister-in-law Phyllis Pohyanyko, and great grandchildren Isabelle Emmett and Zachary Melnyk. Divine Liturgy was celebrated at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 with Rev. Fr. Michael Tkachuk as Celebrant and Stella Fedeniuk as Cantor. Cross bearer was Ashlynn Barron. Pallbearers were Duncan Melnyk, David Hyde, Darrell Bailey, Steve Pohanayko, Steve Barron and Shaun Hyde. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Anne may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation for Palliative Care, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 2B3.
