Obituary

HORNER: Alvin Edgar Horner, best friend and beloved husband of Patricia, passed away suddenly on Sunday, September 3, 2000 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. He will be sadly missed by his wife; his daughter Heather Simone and her husband Richard of Trenton, Ontario; and son Richard and his wife Christine of Brandon. Alvin, a prairie-boy at heart, was born in Minnedosa, Manitoba to Winford and Annie Horner on May 21, 1937, the last of seven children: Wilbert and Fern, Harvey and Mary, and Elliot and Lorna Horner of Minnedosa, Winona and Archie Londry of Rapid City, Eunice and Bert Thorkelson of Winnipeg, and Pete and Joyce Horner of Toronto. Many joyful days were spent on the family farm and later roaming the surrounding hills with his wife and family. Following his education, Al found employment as a train-man for CP Railroad. Some years later he abandoned the allure of the coal locomotive for an accountant's life at car dealerships in Minnedosa and Dauphin. Eight years later, Al entered into a successful partnership with Maurice Currie and opened Parkland Implements, a John Deere dealership. He always loved to share a good story with his customers and many friends. In 1978, the family moved to Brandon and Al became the controller for Westman Equipment. He was happily employed as the accountant at Shur-Gro Farm Services Ltd. for the last five years. "You can take the boy out of the farm, but you can't take the farm out of the boy." Al was a music enthusiast and an active member of both the Central United and later the First Presbyterian Church Choir. He was an accomplished pianist with a deen ear. His devotion to the Wheat City Barbershop Chorus included eight years as director. He received many awards including the S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. president's citation for outstanding contribution and accomplishment and the "1990 Barbershopper Of The Year Award." Other interests included tinkering with antique cars and cruising around town in his 1950 Ford. Al will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humour, his honesty and integrity, and his endless devotion to family and friends. The ceremony to celebrate Al's life was held Wednesday, September 6, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Brandon. Interment followed in the Minnedosa Cemetery. Donations in memory of Al can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 203 - 42 McTavish Ave. E., Brandon, MB, R7A 2B2 or to the Canadian Celiac Association, 190 Britannia Road East, Unit 11, Mississauga, ON, L4Z 1W6.
