Obituary

DEDRICK: Alice Verna, beloved wife of Edward, had fought a long and courageous battle against cancer since 1989, and was finally able to rest on the morning of February 5, 2001, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Alice was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on July 7, 1931, the daughter of Daniel and Ida Hoffmann. She was raised in the small village of Springside, Saskatchewan, where she enjoyed playing a variety of sports and participated in many church activities. In 1965, she graduated from the Brandon General Hospital School of Nursing with a number of awards and accolades and began teaching there shortly afterward. She was the first woman to graduate from the Manitoba School of Management in Winnipeg, and did so at the top of her class (which consisted of 17 other students, all men). She held the position of Systems Analyst at Brandon General Hospital until her retirement in 1973. Alice and Edward were married on December 19, 1970, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Brandon, Manitoba, and she gave birth to their only child, Craig Dedrick, on November 7, 1973. Alice was a kind, intelligent and loving soul. Her great passions were her friends and family, which included her extended family. She organized the Hoffmann Family Reunion in 1994, and published two volumes of her family's history. She was busy writing her third volume until her illness made that impossible, but her work will be completed and assembled by Edward and Craig in her memory. While completing the research for these volumes, Alice was able to connect with a great number of distant relatives from all over the world, and these friendships remained with her until the end. These relationships were a part of what she valued most in this world, and they will remain as part of her legacy for many, many years. Her husband, Edward; her son, Craig; her granddaughter, Emily; her brother and sister; Orval and Dorothy; and her two great friends, Maria Flaherty and Joan Al-Molky, will all miss Alice very much. A funeral service in celebration of her life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330 - 18th Street North, Brandon, Manitoba at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 8, 2001. A private family interment will follow at Brandon Cemetery. The Dedrick family would like to thank all of the people who helped to support their family during the past years. Special thanks to the Manitoba Home Care Program, whose tireless efforts will always be appreciated, and to Dr. Davloor and Joanne Phillips for their kindness and special attention. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Redeemer Lutheran Church. Memorials
