COSGROVE: Alice (nee Avery) Cosgrove (1921-2008), daughter of Harry and Mazie, was born July 23 in her grandmother's farm house at Clearwater, Manitoba. The eldest of four, she is predeceased by her brother Rayburn (Marj) of Vancouver and survived by her brother Leonard (Marion) and sister Verl (Roy), both of Calgary. Widowed at 21 (Frank Harrold), she put herself through teacher's college and graduated from the Winnipeg Normal School. Alice began her career in Melita and Rivers, and then moved on to Brandon where she taught primary grades and remained a proud citizen for over 70 years. In 1951, Alice married Douglas Grant Cosgrove and in 2004, they celebrated 53 years of marriage. Besides substitute teaching, Alice focused on caring for their two daughters Carolyn (Bruce) and Sandra (Joe). Alice held seven executive positions including Treasurer of the Board for Central United Church. Alice was active in the UCW, UCT, Brandon Highway Ladies and made a point of actively contributing to various charities. She later attended Brandon University to pursue her teaching degree and then again in her 70's to study history, world religion and go on line! Alice and Grant enjoyed their home for 38 years before making the proactive decision to move to Lion's Manor. There they made many new friends and appreciated the supports of that community. Alice loved to dance, curl, play rummie and bridge and go to the cabin at Clear Lake. She cherished her three grandsons Adam (Deadra), Dale and Christopher plus great granddaughter, Beatrix Gabrielle born earlier this year. Mom will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, caring and unconditional love. Alice also will be remembered for her clarity, strict values and constant pursuit for learning. She and Dad made every effort to remain in touch with family and friends. Her husband, daughters and grandchildren appreciate how blessed they were to have Alice as a wife, mom and gramma. Her family would like to thank all who have contributed to Mom's care including the staff of the Valleyview Care Centre and Caring Companions. Most especially we would like to acknowledge Joanne, who has contributed to Mom's care and helped by being a local family member. Alice died peacefully and for that we are grateful.
