MITCHELL: Alfred (Alf) Isaac Mitchell, formerly of 141 Frederick Street, passed away at Rideau Park Personal Care Home on Saturday, August 5, 2006. Alf was born June 12, 1921 and raised on the family farm, north of Douglas. He enjoyed helping his dad with the farm work more than school. During the war, some of Alf's older brothers went overseas and Alf stayed on the farm. On June 4, 1946 Alf married Verna Hayward and they were happily married for 60 years. In 1949, Alf started building their home at 141 Frederick Street where they raised their children and lived until 2003. Alf also built their cabin on 3rd Street North at Clear Lake. This was a place that not only Alf and Verna enjoyed, but has now gone on to be a family retreat for Gary and Marlys, as well as their children and grandchildren. During rural electrification in the early 1950's Alf apprenticed as an electrician with Lionel Electric. He was hired by Cy Balmer and worked for Blackwood's Beverages (7 UP) for 28 years; Cy was a big influence in Alf's life. Later he moved to Coca-Cola Bottling for the last 10 years of his working career. Who could ever forget Alf and the "Denim Machine" van. Alf was a very conscientious worker during his active 60 years as a member of the United Commercial Travelers (U.C.T.). While he lived on Frederick Street, Alf enjoyed working with the youth and his involvement with the East End Community Centre. He was President for the centre for 16 years. Alf will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Verna; children Gary (Marlys Swanson), Marilyn (Keith Sherwin), Jim and Guy; grandchildren Sean, Brett (Tracy), Chelsi, Miles, Ryan, Brin, Issac, and Drew; great grandchildren Seth, Aleda, Kobe, and Sammy. Alf is also survived by his brother Tom (Lucille) Mitchell of Brandon; sisters Elsie Balmer, Doris (Royce) McKinnon of Vancouver Island; sisters-in-law Edith Mitchell of California, Dixie Mitchell of Spirit River, Alberta; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Alf was the one who could explain the complexity of how a particular person was related. Alf was predeceased by one sister, six brothers, three sisters-in-law and six brothers-in-law. A Memorial Service will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. A private interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery Columbarium. Urn Bearers will be Sean and Miles Mitchell. Honorary Urn Bearers will be Elmer Ferriss, Dave Poets, and Jim Chrisp. Lunch will be provided by the U.C.T. Ladies at Eastport Hall, 530 Richmond Avenue East, following the graveside service. Donations in memory of Alf may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba-Westman Region, Dementia Research, 1-613-10th Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 4G6. Expressions of Sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
