GOSSELIN: Adele, my beloved wife and the dear mother of my children,
Roxanne and Lance, passed away at my side on Saturday, September 13, 2003.
Adele was predeceased by her parents, Alex and Lillian Jelnick. Left to
cherish her memory with Roxanne, Lance and I are her two sisters, Gayle
Holmes, and Wendy King (Yvon Raymond), both of Ottawa; Roxanne's
husband, Dave Rossiter, and Lance's friend, Charla Green, both of Calgary;
numerous other relatives and innumerable dear friends. Adele was born in
Ottawa on April 26, 1942. She grew up there and worked for a number of
years at Computing Devices of Canada in Bells Corners, Ontario. I met her
in November of 1964, and we were married on June 11, 1966. We spent the
following year in Ottawa, she at Computing Devices and I commuting to
Hull to teach high school. The next year we moved to Toronto so I could
complete my studies at the University of Toronto. From there we went to
Prince Edward Island, where I began my university teaching career, and where
Roxanne was born. In 1971 I obtained a position at Brandon University and
Adele and I have made Brandon our home ever since. Lance was born in 1971
and for many years Adele devoted herself full-time and wholeheartedly to
raising her children and supporting her husband. Over the years, however,
she has had various employments ranging from operating her own hairdressing
business at home and teaching sessional courses in personal grooming at
A.C.C. , to working as a salesperson at Sears and People's Jewellers and
serving as a proctor for Manitoba Health. Adele has been involved in
volunteer work for most of her life and the list of the relevant activities
is really too long to enumerate; one of those most dear to her heart,
however, was her work at Samaritan House. For the last few years her illness
has prevented her from continuing that work, but until nearly the very end
she spoke of returning, when she was well enough, to help out in some
way - if only to answer the phone. My wife had more compassion and Christian
faith than any person I have known; in addition, through some God-given
ability, she was able to establish a sincerely warm relationship with a
complete stranger in a matter of a few minutes (I always marveled at it.)
As a result, she had an incredibly large circle of friends, many of them
very close, and she touched innumerable lives in a profound and loving way -
above all, the lives of her husband and children. I feel very privileged to
have loved her for nearly 39 years. A celebration of Adele's life was held
on Thursday, September 18, 2003 at St. George's Anglican Church.
Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre. Our family
wishes to thank all those who contributed so beautifully to that
celebration. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Samaritan House
Ministries, 630 Rosser Avenue, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 0K7.
