Obituary

WIEBE: Abe Wiebe of Rivers, 84 died at Riverdale Hospital, Monday, April 28, 2008 following a courageous battle with cancer with his wife at his side. Abe Wiebe was born in Plum Coulee on December 18, 1923. He grew up on a farm at Hamburg village where he received his education. He is survived by; his wife Katherine, children Dennis (Gracie), Shirley, and Janey (Larry). Grandchildren; Donovan (Sarah), Dallas, Aaron, Jamie, Michael (Danielle), Chrissy (Jon) and great grandchildren Braiden, Kayla, Rylea, Jaxon, and Hunter. He is also survived by brothers, Jake, Henry (Annie), Dave(Lena) and sister-in-law Agatha and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by; his parents, Jake and Mary, Brothers, Ben and John, Sisters Mary and Helen and his Son in law Jim Lyon. Abe and Katherine married in 1946 and stayed on the family farm until 1949, when he and mom moved to Morris where they lived until 1952. From there they moved to Oak River and in 1953 they moved to Rivers where he worked at CFB Rivers as a Civil Engineer. On closure of the Rivers Base, he finished his last 11 years in Shilo before retiring in 1983. Abe was very involved with Rivers United Church which he joined in 1958. He sang in the choir, served on many committees, primarily the Property committee and eventually became a trustee. He was also involved in the Rivers Legion and called Bingo for over 30 years. Abe and Katherine enjoyed their cottage at Clear Lake for 16 years and this became a favorite summer spot for family and friends. Funeral services was held on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at the Rivers United Church. Interment was in the Rivers cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Riverdale Palliative care.
