Obituary

HEWINS: Harvey "Kenneth" Hewins passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, 2015 at Rideau Park Personal Care Home in Brandon. Ken was born in Portage la Prairie, MB. on April 5, 1929 to Edward and Annie Hewins., one of eight children. His father, a town constable, was killed in an accident, when Ken was only three years old. Ken left school early and apprenticed at a carpentry shop. He moved to Brandon in 1949, and opened a cabinet-making shop with his brother-in -law. He later went out on his own, and also worked for R. E. Turner, Parkdale Builders, and Horizon Builders. Ken was an involved parent in his five children's activities that included hockey, baseball, figure skating and also with the events and caretaking of Central Community Centre. After the children had grown, Ken and Fay started Square Dancing. They travelled many miles and met many wonderful people, many of whom remain close friends.
Ken is survived by his wife of 61 years, Fay (nee Bremner), daughters; Janice (Alfred) Eamer, Linda Lyons, Vanda Mitri, and sons; Allan and Mark. He is also survived by his thirteen grandchildren; Tara (Matt) Smith, Brie-Anne and Leah Eamer, Crystelle and Brocard Lyons, Tegan (Kyle Engler), Tyson and Tess Mitri, Alyx, Kenzie, Danika, Sydney and Shaun Hewins. He leaves two great-granddaughters; Emma Lyons and Natalie Smith as well as one sister, Ada (Keith) Henwood. Numerous nieces and nephews live across Canada. Ken was predeceased by his parents, sisters Jeanne (Andy) Anderson, an infant brother, Anne (Bob) Knight, Lillian (Ralph) Durnin, Marjorie (Don) Coubrough, and brother Ted (Muriel) Hewins. A private family interment was held on January 10, 2015 at the Brandon Cemetery with Mr. Joe Ball officiating. A Come and Go reception was held later in the day at Memories Chapel.
